How many of us put off what we know we should do because of that invisible mental blocker, fear of failure? I know I have. A lot more than I care to remember. As I am writing this, Magic Johnson comes to mind. It was 1984 and Magic was in his third consecutive NBA Finals, his first against Larry Bird. What should have been a final that brought out his best, resulted in Magic earning the nickname “Tragic.”

So, why is forgiveness a powerful elixir and great brand credibility builder? It is an elixir because it frees us from the burden of hate and anger. As Buddha so poignantly put it, hatred and anger are our burdens alone. When we forgive we release this poison.

I cannot tell you how many times I have gone to networking functions and listened to other professionals drone on about what they do, having no idea just how much they are NOT connecting with their audience. And the worst offenders are frequently the most economically successful person in the room.

Only one time in my life that I didn’t, and I got creamed. I am not saying that every time I trust my instincts I am right, proven out or I win. This is certainly not the case. But, I do know this. When I do trust my instincts, I put myself in the best chance to win.

Cam Newton’s dumb comment about a woman reporter who asked about receiver routes in a recent press conference is a case in point. Was it foolish? Yes. Insensitive? Yes. Does it mean he thinks women are lesser than men? I doubt it.

I must say that I am amazed at how many people are afraid to speak up against popular opinion for fear of standing alone. Standing alone is not easy, but it is important if you want to be somebody special.
