There is not a single successful person who has never failed. In fact, I suspect most successful people have failed many more time than they succeeded.
So, why is forgiveness a powerful elixir and great brand credibility builder? It is an elixir because it frees us from the burden of hate and anger. As Buddha so poignantly put it, hatred and anger are our burdens alone. When we forgive we release this poison.
I will be the first to say that I have had my fair share of adversity and hated every moment of it. But, I am proud to say I fought through my challenges and I am certainly stronger, wiser and better for having gone through them.
I remember New Year’s Eve 1999 so well. And it wasn’t because of the computer apocalypse we were all so sure was about to bring the US economy and the rest of the world to its knees. I remember it for a completely different reason.
I cannot tell you how many times I have gone to networking functions and listened to other professionals drone on about what they do, having no idea just how much they are NOT connecting with their audience. And the worst offenders are frequently the most economically successful person in the room.
Only one time in my life that I didn’t, and I got creamed. I am not saying that every time I trust my instincts I am right, proven out or I win. This is certainly not the case. But, I do know this. When I do trust my instincts, I put myself in the best chance to win.
Cam Newton’s dumb comment about a woman reporter who asked about receiver routes in a recent press conference is a case in point. Was it foolish? Yes. Insensitive? Yes. Does it mean he thinks women are lesser than men? I doubt it.
I wonder how many of us who take steps to protect against our identities being stolen are as intentional when it comes to protecting our personal brands? There are two very critical absolutes when it comes to protecting our personal brands:
